Carry and Momentum Combinedtwo premia that fail at different times

Evidence: StrongProfessionalCarry · Multi-factor

Carry and momentum are both well-evidenced in currencies, and — this is the useful part — they lose money at different times. Carry unwinds when volatility spikes; momentum suffers in choppy, reversing markets. Holding both is not twice the risk, it is a meaningfully smoother version of either.

The combination is one of the few things in retail-accessible FX with genuinely strong support on both legs, and it is also one of the least traded, because it requires holding two things that will regularly disagree.

The return here comes from holding, not from being right about direction. That reverses the usual trade-off: time is on your side and volatility is against you, which is the opposite of everything else in this library.

Exact rules

Entry

  • Rank the basket twice at each month end: once by interest rate, once by trailing twelve-month return.
  • Build both books at half your normal total risk each, so the combined risk equals one book.
  • Where the two agree on a currency, the position doubles up naturally. Do not cap that — the agreement is information.
  • Where they disagree, hold both sides. The net position will be small and that is the correct answer, not a problem to solve.

Stop loss

  • Portfolio level only: halve everything after a 10% drawdown, flat at 15%.
  • Keep the volatility switch from the filtered-carry page on the carry leg alone. The momentum leg does not need it and applying it there removes a trend just as it starts working.
  • Total risk 3%–5% across both books.

Take profit / exit

  • None. Both books are rebalanced monthly and that is the only exit.
  • Measure the correlation between your two legs every quarter. If it rises towards 1, you have accidentally built one strategy twice and the diversification you are counting on is not there.
  • The result should look duller than either leg alone. If it does not, something is wrong with the implementation.

More from Carry & rates

Trading carries risk and most retail accounts lose money. Nothing on this page is financial advice or a recommendation to trade. The chart is an illustration of the rules on constructed candles — it is not a record of a trade and not a backtest.
