Structure Break Failurethe break that turns out to be the top
A structure break is supposed to confirm continuation, which is exactly what makes a failed one informative. Price takes out the last swing high, everyone treats it as confirmation, and then it closes back below.
This is the failed-breakout mechanism from the price-action book applied to the specific level that structure traders are watching. The value is in knowing where those traders committed, and that is unusually knowable here because the level is defined mechanically.
The vocabulary on this page comes from trading education, not from research. Where it renames something with real support, the page says so. A name is not a finding.

Exact rules
Entry
- A confirmed swing high, by the fractal definition, in an established uptrend.
- Break: a close above it. Structure traders are now long and their stops are below the break.
- Failure: a close back below that swing high within three bars.
- Enter short at that close. Mirror for the other direction.
Stop loss
- Above the failed break's extreme, plus 0.4 × ATR(14).
- This is a counter-trend trade against an established uptrend, so the stop is absolute and the size is small.
- Risk 0.25%–0.5%.
Take profit / exit
- TP1 at 2R.
- TP2 at the last confirmed swing low — where the structure would genuinely change character.
- Out on a close back above the swing high. The failure has itself failed and there is nothing left.

More from Market structure
Trading carries risk and most retail accounts lose money. Nothing on this page is financial advice or a recommendation to trade. The chart is an illustration of the rules on constructed candles — it is not a record of a trade and not a backtest.
