The News Blackouta gate in front of every other strategy you run

Evidence: StrongBeginnerNews · Filter

This is not a trade. It is the rule that decides when none of your other strategies are allowed to be in the market, and it belongs in this book because the same research that makes news tradeable is what makes it dangerous to everything else.

Two findings set the window. Price drift begins about thirty minutes before a US macro release (Kurov, Sancetta, Strasser & Wolfe, 2019), and liquidity and trading costs do not return to normal until roughly five to fifteen minutes after it.

So a strategy that assumes an ordinary spread and an ordinary book has no business holding a position across that window — whatever its entry signal says.

Exact rules

Entry

  • Build the pair-to-release map once. Payrolls, CPI and the rate decision move the dollar; the ECB decision and euro-area inflation move the euro; and a release that moves neither leg of your pair is not your problem.
  • Blackout window: no new entry from 30 minutes before a tier-one release to 15 minutes after it.
  • Existing positions: flat before the window on any strategy whose stop is smaller than the release's typical first-minute range. That is most intraday strategies.
  • A strategy with a wide stop and a multi-day horizon can hold through — but size it as though the stop will be tested, because it may be.
  • Verify the window against your own broker: log the spread minute by minute through three releases before trusting anyone else's numbers.

Stop loss

  • This gate places no stops. It decides which stops are allowed to exist during the window.
  • The test is simple: if your stop is smaller than the release's typical first-minute range, the release can take it out without the market having moved anywhere. Be flat.
  • The same rule governs pending orders. A resting stop order inside the window is a position you have not thought about.

Take profit / exit

  • No targets either. What this gate does is keep the other pages' targets from being decided by an event none of them modelled.
  • Review the map each quarter. Which releases move a currency changes with what the market is worried about that year.
  • Keep the log. The reason to trust the blackout is your own spread data, not a rule somebody handed you.
