Microstructure Reversionthe spread's own footprint

Evidence: StrongProfessionalScalping · Mean reversion

In an efficient market, the act of trading leaves a trace. Buyers lift the ask and sellers hit the bid, so observed prices alternate between the two sides even when nothing about the instrument has changed. Roll showed this produces negative serial correlation in consecutive price changes — and that the size of it measures the spread itself.

The trade: after a run of consecutive lower closes with no level broken and no news, price tends to revert toward the middle of that run. You are not trading a move. You are trading the fact that there was no move.

The mechanism and the cost are the same thing. The bounce exists because of the spread, and the spread is what you pay to trade it. That is why the spread gate below is not a refinement — it is the strategy.

Exact rules

Entry

  • Count consecutive lower closes on M1. Six or more, with no candle breaking a marked level, is the setup.
  • Spread gate, checked before anything else: the current spread must be below one third of the intended target. If the target is 3 pips, the spread must be under 1 pip. Fail this and there is no trade — not a smaller trade.
  • No scheduled news within fifteen minutes, before or after.
  • The run must be noise: total range of the run below 1.5 × ATR(14) on M1. A run larger than that is a move, and this strategy has nothing to say about moves.
  • Trigger: the first candle that closes above the previous candle's close. Enter at that close.
  • Mirror every rule for a run of higher closes.

Stop loss

  • Below the low of the run, plus the spread.
  • Typically two to three pips on EURUSD. If it comes out much wider than that, the run was a move and the setup was misread.
  • Risk 0.25% per trade. The stop is small, so the position size is large, and slippage on exit is the real cost here — not the stop distance.

Take profit / exit

  • The midpoint of the run. Not beyond it — the reversion documented here is to the middle, not to the start.
  • Time exit after ten M1 candles regardless of price. If the reversion has not happened by then, the run was not noise.
  • No partials. At this size, two exits means paying the spread twice on one idea.

More from Scalping

Trading carries risk and most retail accounts lose money. Nothing on this page is financial advice or a recommendation to trade. The chart is an illustration of the rules on constructed candles — it is not a record of a trade and not a backtest.
