Order Flow Imbalancethe book, not the chart

Evidence: StrongProfessionalScalping · Microstructure

Over very short intervals, price does not move because of a pattern. It moves because the flow of orders at the best bid and the best ask is lopsided. Cont, Kukanov and Stoikov measured that directly and found a linear relationship between order flow imbalance and the price change that follows, with the slope set by how deep the book is.

The trade: when imbalance builds on one side while price is still flat, take the side the flow is on, and exit when the imbalance neutralises.

This one needs a real order book. A spot broker's aggregated feed does not have it, and tick volume is not a substitute. On MetaTrader that means an exchange-connected symbol; otherwise it means the futures contract.

Exact rules

Entry

  • Compute order flow imbalance over a rolling window: additions and cancellations at the best bid, against the same at the best ask.
  • Precondition: price has been within a band of about 1.5 pips for at least twenty seconds. You want imbalance before the move, not after it.
  • Trigger: imbalance exceeds the 80th percentile of its own recent distribution, on one side.
  • Enter with the imbalance, at market. A limit order here is a way of missing the trade that worked and getting filled on the one that did not.
  • Skip when depth is thin — the same imbalance moves price much further, and the slope you measured no longer holds.

Stop loss

  • About 1.2 pips against the entry. Fixed, not structural — the thesis is about the next few seconds, and structure has nothing to do with it.
  • Hard cancel if imbalance flips before the stop is hit. Do not wait for the stop to confirm what the book has already told you.
  • Risk 0.25% per trade.

Take profit / exit

  • Exit when imbalance returns to neutral. That is the signal ending, and it usually comes before any price target would.
  • Hard cap at 4 pips. Beyond that you are no longer trading the imbalance, you are holding a position.
  • Time exit after ninety seconds.
