Risk-Off Safe Haven Entrybuying gold on the day equities break

Evidence: ModerateIntermediateGold · Risk aversion

Gold's reputation as a safe haven is half deserved, and the half that is deserved is very specific. Baur and Lucey's work drew the distinction that matters: a hedge is uncorrelated on average, a safe haven is uncorrelated exactly when equities fall hard. Gold is both, but the safe-haven behaviour lasts days, not months.

So this is a short-horizon trade by construction. It buys gold on a heavy equity down day and it is out within a week, because the effect the evidence describes has faded by then.

This page is about a driver of the gold price, not a chart shape. The driver is what the evidence is for — the entry trigger is ordinary and interchangeable, and swapping it for another one in this library does not damage the idea.

Exact rules

Entry

  • Signal: the equity index closes down by more than 1.5 × its own ATR(14) in one day.
  • Confirmation the same day: gold closes up. If gold fell alongside equities, this is a liquidation event rather than a flight to safety, and the trade is off — that distinction is the whole strategy.
  • Enter at the next gold session open.
  • No stacking. One position per risk-off event, however many days the selling runs.

Stop loss

  • 1.2 × ATR(14) below the entry.
  • Gold in a genuine liquidation can fall with everything else as people sell what they can. The stop is what protects you from having read the event wrong.
  • Risk 0.5%.

Take profit / exit

  • Time exit after five days, unconditionally. This is the most important rule on the page.
  • TP1 at 1.5R if it gets there first.
  • Exit immediately if the equity index recovers more than half of the down day. The condition that created the trade has reversed.
